Skin Care Routine for Dry Skin

Caring for skin that is dry is as tough as caring for skin that is oily. Dry skin is described as not having the suitable amount of water in the epidermis layer of the skin. Dry skin equally affects both males and females however the  older individuals are  more prone to this condition.Dry skin requires special care,so a daily skin care routine is very  important. Extreme dry skin is also known as “Xerosis”. This develops when the upper layer or the skin known as “dermis” loses moisture. When this happens skin starts coming off and is an early symptom to dry skin.

Dry skin may be caused by external factors (such as low humidity and cold temperatures) and internal factors (such as genetics, age, family history, and health conditions ).

Certain medical conditions such as atopic dermatitis , inflammation of dermis resulting in the red, swollen, itchy and cracked skin may also cause dry  skin . It is a common side effect of drugs taken for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, acne, and allergies. People with thyroid problems are also prone to having dry skin.

Tips for the routine care of dry skin

Limit your time in the shower or bath to 5 or 10 minutes. Use warm rather than hot water

Apply moisturizer immediately after washing. Ointments, creams, and lotions (moisturizers) work by trapping existing moisture in your skin. To trap this much-needed moisture,  apply a moisturizer within few minutes of drying off after a shower or bath.

Always wear a  lip balm. Choose a lip balm that feels good on your lips

Use only gentle, unscented skin care productsSome skin care products are too harsh for dry, sensitive skin. Avoiding these products will help your skin retain its natural oils.

Choose non-irritating clothes and laundry detergentWhen the  skin is dry and raw even clothes and laundry detergent can be irritating.

Add moisture to the air. Plug in a humidifier. If you can check your home heating system, find out if you have a humidifier on the system — and whether it’s working.

Avoid having alcohol and caffeine because consuming them lead to extreme dryness and will make you face look pale and dull.

Cleansing, Exfoliating and Toning the Skin are very important to maintain the moisture on your face. Fruits such as mango and papaya, tomatoes and Cucumber juiced or sliced can help in getting the facial skin glow.
